Behind the Octopus: Interview with Elliot (Telomic)

What is it that makes Black Octopus Sound the go-to sample pack label for professional music production tools and samples? Itโ€™s the team! Welcome to Black Octopus: Behind the Octopus! This is our exclusive interview series where we dive beneath the surface and meet the incredible people behind the samples. While the sounds you hear in our packs might seem like magic, thereโ€™s a passionate and creative team making it all happen.

Today weโ€™re sitting down with Elliot (Telomic), a core creative force at Black Octopus Sound. Elliot has been a long-standing part of the BOS family, consistently bringing his experience, technical knowledge, and sharp creative insight into our sample packs and day-to-day operations. His contributions help shape the quality and consistency that producers around the world have come to expect from Black Octopus Sound.

Behind The Octopus Interview Series โ€“ Elliot

Q – How long have you been at Black Octopus Sound?
As a sound designer, I started in 2017, but I joined the team officially in 2018!

Q – What is your favorite artist and favorite genre as a listener?
Favourite artist? Hard to pick one, but right now Iโ€™m big into Sammy Virji and Loyle Carner! Genre is the same, depends on my mood, some days itโ€™s metal (big into the newer Bring Me The Horizon releases), other days itโ€™s garage

Q – What do you love most about working in the Sample Pack industry?
How varied the content we work with is, one day weโ€™ll be dealing with tearout riddim, the next day itโ€™ll be a collection of wind instruments, and then round the week out by going through some glitch with everything inbetween

Q – What is your favourite sample pack release from Black Octopus Sound?
Big fan of โ€˜Midnight Chillโ€™ by Tim Schaufert

Q – What about your favourite production tool or technique, any secret weapons?
The lastest for me is โ€˜Laserโ€™ itโ€™s a VST that reads the incoming signal and crafts a multiband sidechain envelope based on the incoming signal, more utility tool than mad sound design beast, but as someone who mainly produces DnB itโ€™s so important to get the kick and bass locked in properly and this helps a lot

Q – How do you see the future of music and sample pack creation?
With the growth of AI, Iโ€™m a big fan of the idea of using AI to help human creativity, rather than replace it. I think of Skrillex, AI couldnโ€™t do what he has done, the innovation. It only copies existing material. With that being said, itโ€™s clearly a really powerful tool, and combining AIโ€™s power with human innovation has some exciting possibilities.

Q – What about producers; whatโ€™s the future of helping them stay inspired?
Weโ€™ve been working on some more left-field packs recently, outside of the more classic Dubstep/Trap/EDM stuff weโ€™ve been known for, and I think that is always inspiring, hearing sounds outside of the stuff you hear all the time, and flipping that into something completely different.

Q – If you could be any animal what would it be and why?
Weird one, but Galapagos Tortoise, they live for ages, they grow to weigh almost 500kg sometimes, and they just chill โ€“ Iโ€™ll take that
